With more than 300 days of sunshine a year and hot, humid summers, the Costa del Sol is a great place to live, but a tricky one for storing cannabis. Here is how to keep your flowers in good condition all year round.
Keep it cool
Heat is the biggest threat. Above roughly 25 °C, terpenes start to evaporate faster and the aroma fades. Choose the coolest spot in your home, away from windows, appliances and direct sunlight. Never leave flowers in a parked car: in summer, the inside can easily go above 50 °C.
Control humidity
Coastal air is humid, especially at night. Too much moisture inside the jar can lead to mould; too little makes flowers dry and brittle. The range most people aim for is between 55% and 62% relative humidity. Two-way humidity packs placed inside the jar help keep it steady.
Block the light
Ultraviolet light breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes. A clear jar on a sunny shelf is the worst possible option. Use opaque or amber glass containers, or keep them in a cupboard or drawer.
Choose the right container
- Airtight glass jars: they don’t transfer odours and keep air under control.
- Avoid plastic bags: static electricity pulls trichomes off the flower, and they let air in.
- Right size: the less empty space in the jar, the less oxidation.
Common mistakes
- Putting flowers in the fridge or freezer: temperature changes create condensation.
- Opening the jar too often: every opening lets in new air and moisture.
- Storing them next to spices, coffee or anything with a strong smell.
The simple rule
Cool, dark, airtight and with controlled humidity. Follow those four points and your flowers will keep their aroma much longer, even in the middle of August.
